Abstract
Microcapsules contg. a water-insol. liquid (I) are made in an aq. liquid medium (II) held in motion, using a high molecular weight wall material (III) which is insol. in (I) and in (II) but which is sol. in a volatile solvent (IV) which is sol. in (I). The process comprises dispersing a mixture of (III) and (IV) in a medium consisting of (II) contg. dispersed (I) to cause sepn. of (III) at the phase borders, removing (IV) and opt. cross linking (III). Pref. a soln. of a copolymer contg. hydrophilic, hydrophobic and cross-linking groups is made (eg 20-65 wt.% methylmethaceylate, 10-65 wt.% acetylacetic acid esters of mono(meth)acrylates and 0-30 wt.% acrylamide, acrylic acid or vinylpyrrolidone) in an aq. medium contg. a protective colloid such as PVA and the core material, is e.g. an alkylbenzene solvent containing a dye precursor. Products are esp. useful in the prodn. of carbon paper.
