Abstract
A hollow cylindrical mass of Zn powder has the central bore filled with a compressible material, esp. foamed polyurethane. Immediately surrounding the anode is a layer of gelled electrolyte surrounded in turn by a spiral conductive grill defining an air cathode, the air reaching the electrolyte with which it reacts via the spaces in the grill. A metal wool jacket connects the cathode conductor to a positive terminal above a top insulating disc over the anode. A negative terminal plate on the bottom of the anode is enclosed in a ring insulator which seals the electrolyte annulus. An air access ring is left between that and the outer protective sheath. This has an aperture in the top from the positive terminal and has air access holes to the cathode. Compressible material core prevents damage due to expansion as the metallic Zn oxidises.
