Abstract
Process comprises (a) oxidant preheating at 750-1300 degrees C of a seived graded charge e. iron bearing ores, sinter or pellets opt with fondants, (b) homogeneously mixing the preheated charge with a solid carbon reducing agent pref. cold seived coke, (c) introducing the total charge into >=1 sealed vertical pretreatment furnace (I) which continuously feeds the electric furnace, (II), (d) lowering the charge in (I) in counter-current to hot reducing gases from (II) (e) injecting finely-divided air into the upper part of (I) to ensure neutral combustion of the gases which have somewhat prereduced the material in the lower part of (I), (f) evacuating and aspirating burnt gases so that the press of gases at the vault of (II) is constantly adjusted to a value close to that of the ambient atmos, and (g) injecting hydrocarbons opt. with O2 into the axis of Soderberg electrodes in (II) and close to their ends to obt. suitable qualities and quantities of reducing gases.
