Abstract

A pre-tensioned highly extensible (e.g. 100%) pref single filament core yarn (e.g. polyurethane) and a pref. false twist textured multi-filament gump yarn (e.g. polyester) having an extension capacity of 20% are pref. fed together through a doubling spindle such that the gump yarn is wound around the core yarn to produce a composite yarn having a reduced extension capability (e.g. 10%) suitable for knitting. Pref. the gump and core yarns are fed from separate stationary packages supported around the doubling spindle and pref. a bull-type tension device is provided in the doubling spindle. The composite yarn can be produced at high speeds and can be knitted without special auxiliary equipment.
