Abstract

Red mud is utilised by mixing the wet red mud, below water b.pt. depending on press., with bitumen, tars, pitch, oils, etc., to form a homogeneous emulsion, which can be used as coatings or binders, pref. in prodn. of bituminous blending material for paving and road surfaces; protective coatings wherever evapn. of water from emulsion is not prevented, binders for asphalt, modifiers for epoxy resins, polystyrene and polyurethane. Pref. pt. of the water present in red mud may be displaced by adding small amts. of a surfactant during dispersion. Water-contg. compsn. may be free from further water by kneading or compression. Residual moisture may be removed by supplying heat or it may be rendered ineffective directly before use, by adding water-absorbent agents.
