Abstract
A flux based on red mud can be used to dephosphorise steel more efficiently than conventional fluxes. It will also desulphurises and decarbonise. The material contains red mud from Al prodn. adjusted by small additions to contain 20-45 pref. 40-45% Al2O3; 15-30 pref. 20-25% Fe2O3; 7-12 pref. 10-12% SiO2; 3-10% CaO balance pitch binder 3-4% and heating losses. The material is briquetted by addition of water glass solns. and pressing. After drying at 120-170 degrees C it can be added to the refining vessel and produces up to 75+% dephosphorisation.
