Abstract
Fuse is intended for the simultaneous ignition of an explosive at a large number of points; it comprises a sheath of lead (alloy), surrounding an explosive, such as hexogen or octogen. The sheath is compacted inside an external sheath made from a ductile, metallic material which has a mechanical strength superior to that of the lead (alloy). Apart from the high rate of transmission of the detonation and the small loss in speed, the high strength of the outside sheath, which is, pref. stainless steel, facilitates the use of the fuse in many pyrotechnic assemblies. In mfre. the lead sheath surrounding the explosive is threaded inside the outer sheath leaving a small gap between the two sheaths. The dia. of the assembly is then reduced by drawing and the whole assembly compressed at an isostatic press. of ca. 5000 bars to improve the homogeneity.
