Abstract

In the construction of a shell and tube heat exchanger each tube is sealed into the tube plate by means of a resilient joint under compression. The joint may be compressed between the end of a tube and the bottom shoulder of a counter-bored hole in the tube plate; alternatively, each tube end can be radially gripped in an axially-compressed 'O'-ring. The resilient joint permits tubes made to commercial tolerances to be assembled in tube plates without difficulty. The joint permits relative movement of plate and tube as temp. change.
