Abstract

Method comprises establishing, in the solidification front region, a marginal zone which surrounds the metal flowing from the casting vessel and extends transversely in the sense of the metal flow. The zone does not permit radial evacuation of heat from the casting metal and by placing a cooling zone immediately after this zone, a sharp temp. gradient can be obtained at the solidification front. A plane, convex or concave front can be obtained.
