Abstract

A package of yarn obtained from natural, artificial or synthetic fibres, esp. cotton, is wound on a rotatable perforated support and the alkaline mercerising fluid is forced radially outwards through the package under centrifugal action, the support being mounted in an evacuated chamber to prevent emulsification of the fluid. Pref. the support comprises a central perforated cylinder carrying an outer wire formation for absorbing radial expansion or contraction of the package, and pref. the package thickness is not >25% of the radius of the support.
