Abstract

Sulphonated polyimides (I) used as ion exchanges and in electrodialysis. Polyimides have the formula: (where R is tetravalent org. radical, Ar is aromatic divalent radical, Ar' is aliphatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic radical, n is a whole no., x is 1 to 4 and m = 0 or whole no.) and are prepd. by reactg. sulphonic diamine of formula H2N-Ar-NH2 in the pres. or absence of H2N-Ar'NH2, with a tetracarboxylic compn. These polymers are partic. useful, in film form, as cationic membranes for purification of saline solns. and for obtg. org. liquids of high resistivity.
