Abstract

The workpieces are contacted with an electroless metallising bath consisting of an aqs. soln. of an electroless metal plating salt and a chemical reducing agent, and a quantity of metallic particles, wherein the particles are essentially insoluble in the bath and inert and non-catalytic and non-displacing with respect to the electroless plating metal ions in the bath. The particles are present in the bath in an amount by wt. no greater than about ten times the wt. of the electroless plating metal in the bath expressed as free metal. The particles are maintained in suspension throughout the bath during the metallising of the workpiece. The metallising bath pref. contains Ni or Co ions as a source of metal and hypophosphite anion or an alkylborazane or a borohydride as the reducing agent, or may contain copper ions as a source of metal with formaldehyde as the reducing agent. The metallic particles are selected from Cr, Mo, W, B, Ti, V, Zr, Nb, Ta and alloys. The metallic particles have dimensions 0.1 micron to 50 microns.
