Abstract

Wood is impregnated with a polymerizable composition comprising not less than 40% by weight of monomer with one double bond, a monomer-soluble low molecular weight addition polymer of molecular weight about 3000, and a free radical catalyst which will initiate polymerization of the mixture below 80‹ C., and heated in inert gas to a temperature to start polymerization, the temperature being kept below 110‹ C. in this stage, and finally when the reaction is finished the wood is heated at a temperature not higher than 160‹ C. Suitably styrene, with or without a cross-linking monomer such as divinyl benzene, is mixed with polybutadiene or polyisobutylene as the polymer. Suitable catalysts include methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and benzoyl peroxide. Acrylic acid may be present to form a clear homogeneous solution, and the solution may contain bonding agents such as the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A.
