Abstract

A continuous alkaline process for producing pulp from wood chips, wherein preheated chips are subjected to an extended impregnation step outside the digester for at least 60 min, preferably longer, at a temperature not exceeding the boiling point of the impregnation liquor at atmospheric pressure, and a rapid heating and cooking cycle in the digester for less than about 90 min, preferably less, followed by cooling to a temperature below the reaction temperature. Fresh alkali is added both during the impregnation step and during the heating/cooking cycle.
