Abstract

4-(2,3-Dichlorophenyl) 1,4-dihydro 2,6-dimethyl 3-ethoxy-carbonyl 5-methoxycarbonyl pyridine is made by (a) reacting methyl aceto-acetate with 2,3-dichloro benzaldehyde in toluene, with bubbling nitrogen chloride gas through the mixt. at 0-5 deg. C until satd., stirring for 60 hours at ambient temp. and standing for 6 hours (b) removing solvent, treating with CHCl3 and washing with dil. NaOH soln. and water (c) drying, distilling in vacuum and crystallising from 1:1 ethanol/ether to obtain methyl 2,3-dichloro benzylidene aceto-acetate (d) reacting with ethyl 3-amino crotonate in tert. butanol with stirring for 6-8 hours and standing for 4 days and (e) evaporating the solvent in vacuum and crystallising from 2,2'-oxy-bispropane.
