Abstract
Uniform heat transfer through the cylindrical heat transfer wall of a steam heated hollow dryer drum is attained by longitudinal spoiler bars effecting turbulence of condensate throughout a major extent of the inner surface of the heat transfer wall. Condensate turbulence is generated in a narrow annular area from which a stationary siphon intake head withdraws the condensate from the steam chamber. - A turbulence promoter is carried by the intake head. It comprises a rigid or yieldably supported structure, e.g. a brush, rigid or flexible bar structure or an array of fingers, mounted on the downstream or off-running side of the intake head having regard to the direction of rotation of the drum. (1/5) EPAB- EP-156758 B A steam heated hollow dryer drum (10) for use in a paper making machine, said drum (10) being adapted to be mounted for rotation with its perimeter in contact with a wet paper web to be dried, the drum (10) defining a steam chamber (12) within a shell having a thin cylindrical heat transfer wall (1) and opposite end closures (13 14), means for introducing steam (18) into the chamber (12), a stationary siphon (20) within the chamber (12) and having an intake head (23) for drawing off condensate (24) along an annular relatively narrow area (27) of an inner surface of said wall (11) adjacent to one (13) of said end closures (13, 14), and which narrow area (27) rotates past said intake head (23), and comprising means for attaining efficiently uniform heat transfer through said wall, including spoiler bars (25) extending longitudinally on a major area of said inner surface of said wall (11) between said narrow area (27) and the opposite end closure (14) for effecting turbulence of condensate to improve heat transfer through said major area in the rotation of the drum (10), characterised by turbulence promoting means (28, 35, 37) carried by said intake head (23) and projecting toward said narrow annular area (27) for effecting turbulence of the condensate (24) and improved heat transfer in said narrow area (27) as said narrow area (27) rotates past said intake head (23), said turbulence promoting means (28, 35, (39) being mounted on the side of said intake head (23) which faces in the offrunning direction of said narrow area (27) and extending across substantially the full width of said narrow annular area (27).
