Abstract

Aq. concentrate for treating wood by deep penetration contains (1) a halogenated phenol (I), (2) a phenolic resin prepolymer (II) (the cured prod. prevents migration of (I) from the wood) and (3) a polar cosolvent coupling agent (III) to enhance the water compatibility of the concentrate. - The blooming effect normally observed with use of (I) in wood is avoided as bleeding or leaching of (I) from the wood is reduced, even when the treated wood is in contact with rainwater or ground water. With the concentrates greater penetration of the wood can be achieved, and when the wood is heated, (II) is rapidly cured to lock the (I) deep in the wood. The treated wood has high resistance to microbial deterioration and insect attack. EPAB- EP--86827 B An aqueous water-dilutable concentrate suitable for treating wood by deep penetration, said concentrate consisting essentially of:- (a) a halogenated phenol wood preservative; (b) a phenolic resin prepolymer which after curing prevents the migration of the halogenated phenol from the wood; and (c) a polar cosolvent coupling agent for ensuring the water compatibility of the halogenated phenol/prepolymer combination, the weight ratio of halogenated phenol to resin prepolymer amounting from 3:1 to 1:15. (8pp) USAB- US4433031 A Process for deeply penetrative wood preservation comprises treatment at low pressure to remove moisture; one or more immersions in a soln. contg. a halogenated phenol, a phenolic resin prepolymer and a stabiliser, first at low pressure and then at above 1 atm; and the wood is opt.heated with steam to cure the resin. - Preservative agent comprises pentachlorophenol (1 pt.wt.); PhOH-HCHO prepolymer (2-10 pts.wt.); MeOH; water (at least 50 wt.%); opt. one or more surfactants (0-5 wt.%); and opt. Cu 8-hydroxyquinolinate. (5pp)n
