Abstract

Polymerisable compsn. for producing hard hydrophilic materials in the dry state and swelling in water, comprises one or more vinyl monomers with hydrophilic gps. and opt. a crosslinking agent, the novel feature being that the compsn. also contains a high mol. wt., linear, hydrophilic polymer (I) which is soluble in the vinyl monomers and in water. Also claimed is a process for producing a hydrophilic material as above and which can be machined and polished in the dry state, by polymerising the compsn. by irradiation (in a mould) with microwaves using pref. a frequency of 10 power 6 to 10 power 11, pref. 2450, esp. 916 MHz. The compsn. is partic. for producing contact lenses having good mechanical props., esp. elasticity, in the hydrated state.
