Abstract

Alkali metal alkylarylsulphonate useful as solvents for removing pesticide residues from plants (esp. from fruit and vegetables) are of formula (I) (where X is an alkali metal, pref. Na or K, and R is 10-18C alkyl). Claimed process for preparing (I) comprises chlorinating RH to form RCl, reacting RCl with benzene, sulphonating the R-substd. benzene, and neutralising the resulting sulphonic acid with an alkali metal carbonate.
