Abstract
Prodn. of a welded steel rod grid comprises (a) hot rolling steel into rod leaving the last rolling mill stand at 1000 degrees C (b) water cooling the rod surface to 300-700 degrees C to obtain a surface layer of martensite or bainite (c) air cooling to temper the surface layer and (d) without any drawing or other mechanical work, the rod is aligned as a grid and welded at the overlapping junctions. After (b), the rod can be formed into non-concentric loops laid on a conveyor for air cooling and then assembled into coils. The air cooling is pref. in still air which drops the rod temp. by 100 degrees C. During hot rolling, bulges or grooves are pref. formed on the rod. The rod is straightened before cutting to length for grid mfr. The steel is pref. a carbon-manganese steel contg. 0.05-1.0%, esp. 0.08-0.35% C and the initial steel is pref. at equilibrium or killed.
