Abstract

A procedure for the preparation of new nitrocarboestyril derivatives of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: **(See formula)** where R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen or an alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, aralkoxy, aryl, aralkyl, heterocyclic, hydroxy, nitro or halogen group or any two of the R1, R2, R3 and R4 groups together with the atoms of carbon to which they are attached complete a carbocyclic ring, substituted or unsubstituted, and R5 represents hydrogen or an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, provided that: a) R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are not all hydrogen; b) R2 is not a nitro group when R1, R3, R4 and R5 are all hydrogen and e) R2 and R4 are not both a nitro group when R1, R3 and R5 are all hydrogen, whose process comprises the nitration of a compound of formula (II) **(See formula)** where R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are those defined by referring to formula (I) and, if desired, salification of the resulting nitro compound.
