Abstract
A process for recovering valuable amounts of fluorine from waste gases from an electrolytic reduction cell for aluminum production comprising entraining alumina composed of a wide range of particle sizes in a stream of said waste gas, maintaining entrained alumina particles in said gas stream for a contact time sufficient to react a substantial proportion of the hydrogen fluoride of said waste gas with the alumina, continuously separating a major proportion of said selected alumina to be above of a predetermined size from said waste gas stream in a first separation stage and then collecting the remaining small proportion, made up of fine alumina particles, from said waste gas stream in a second separation stage, the particles having alumina above this size or preselected content low enough carbon for allowing its return directly to an electrolytic reduction Cuba without any intermediate heat treatment.
