Abstract

Liquid fuel pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to internal combustion engines of the type comprising an injection pump driven in timed relationship with the associated engine, a feed pump for supplying fuel under pressure to the injection pump at a pressure which varies according to the speed at which the apparatus is actuated, a regulating member to command or control the quantity of fuel supplied to the injection pump and to thereby control the quantity of fuel supplied to the associated engine and means operable by pressure of fluid to control the timing of fuel discharge by the injection pump, characterized in that said fluid pressure actuatable means comprise, in combination, a concave piston mounted within a first cylinder, first elastic means for forcing said piston towards a first end of said cylinder, defining dic ho concave piston a second cylinder having its closed end remote from said first end of said first cylinder, a second piston mounted on said second cylinder, second elastic means for forcing said second piston away from the closed end of said second cylinder, said coupling being coupled second piston to a part of the injection pump whereby the movement of the piston will determine the variation of the fuel injection timing, conduit means to connect said first end of the first cylinder with the feed pump and control means to admit fluid under pressure at the closed end of said second cylinder according to the adjustment of said regulating member, said control means acting to lower the fluid pressure at the closed end of said second cylinder when the regulating member is adjusted to reduce the amount of fuel supplied by the feed pump to the injection pump, whereby the pistons will move relative to each other against the action of the second elastic means.
