Abstract

A residue-containing petroleum fraction, 50 percent boiling above 1,000 DEG F, is hydrocracked and then hydrodesulfurized. During the onstream period, the conversion level of material boiling above 1,000 DEG F is maintained substantially constant while the sulfur content of the hydrocracked effluent increases. The sulphur content of a product fraction is maintained substantially constant by gradually increasing the hydrodesulfurization temperature. The effluent from the hydrocracking reaction is cooled by adding an aromatic-rich fraction and the cooled mixture is passed to the desulfurization reaction.
