Abstract
An apparatus for arc-melting samples to liberate any occluded gases (which can be analysed by spectrographic or chromatographic analysis) therefrom comprises a vertical chamber contructed of a plurality of detachable parts, having a vertically movable electrode 44 (Fig. 1) along the axis of the chamber and a sample holder 46 which comprises two rotatable turntables 46 and 461 (Fig. 2) placed symmetrically with respect to the chamber axis and each having an annular series of sample holders 48 positioned to bring the samples in turn under the electrode and being truncated along a chord such that when the truncated portion of one turntable is opposite the electrode the other turntable can rotate freely at the same level, the turntables being equipped with means for independent rotation. The arc spectrum produced during melting may be analysed spectrographially through windows 22 or the liberated gases may be removed from the chamber and analysed chromatographically.
