Abstract
An apparatus, Fig. 1, for treating a fragmented material M by a gas, comprises a chamber 1 with a horizontally disposed perforated floor 2 supporting the material, a gas forced through the floor from underneath to fluidize and treat the material, a motor 6 to vibrate the floor 2, and walls bounding each perforation 3 which extend downwardly and whose length L is equal to or greater than the amplitude of vibration 2A of the floor and which are in contact with the gas on all sides. In a drying, heating or cooling apparatus the gas is maintained at a high pressure by a pump 4 and is fed below the floor 2 via a heater or cooling apparatus 5. The floor 2 may consist of a plurality of U-shaped parallel bars 11, Fig. 7, spaced apart to provide the perforations 3. The walls bounding the perforations are formed by the downwardly extending wings of the U-shaped bars 11, one wing of which may be slightly extended downwards and provided with a perpendicular extension 16 which underlies the unextended wing of the adjacent bar 11 in order to prevent excessive loss of the material M when the apparatus is inoperative. The perpendicular extension which may be shaped to increase the gas flow velocity may be on either wing but always on the same wing of each bar. The wings on each bar may alternatively be of the same length and the free ends may be slightly inclined towards each other (Fig. 4, not shown). The parallel bars 11 are held in two horizontal slideways (13, Fig. 5, not shown), each bar being provided with spacers (14). Where the bars 11 fit into the slideways (13) they are closed by a further U-shaped member (13). The bars are preferably disposed perpendicularly to the direction of flow D of the material M through the apparatus. Alternatively Fig. 8 (not shown) the floor (2) may be formed from a thin sheet having staggered rows of orifices (3) which have inserted therethrough tubes (18) which are further supported by members (21) connecting rows of tubes together.
