Abstract
A tunnel furnace, for enamelling bath-tubs 10 passed through a curing chamber 2 on support platforms 11, is heated by a circulation of combustion gases (see arrows 40, 41) from a series of burners 19 located in a side wall 27 of the chamber 2. The bath-tubs are carried in cradles 18 mounted on the platforms 11 which slide by means of shoes 12 on rails 13. An automatic device (not shown) is provided for withdrawing each tub on reaching the area 9 adjacent the chamber outlet 24. The empty platform is removed from the chamber through a trap door 21 by a vertically movable drop-plate 23, the platform being lowered and transferred on to a conveyer 42 to be returned to the inlet end of the chamber. The platform is here raised by an elevator plate (48, Fig. 1a, not shown), loaded with a new bath-tub, and then introduced into the chamber by a thrust device (55). Waste gases are removed from the chamber through a stack (29) located adjacent the inlet end. Injector nozzles (33, Fig. lb) fed by a fan (34, Fig. 2) are provided in the wall 27 in the region of the chamber having no burners the injectors subject the combustion gases circulating through the chamber in a direction opposite to the movement of the bath tubs to a vortex motion.
