Abstract

A fabric characterised by having a fabric surface-fabric surface dynamic coefficient of friction not greater than 0.4 and an abrasion resistance of at least 300 cycles is made by air laying a web of randomly arranged continuous filaments, at least some of which are potentially-adhesive bicomponent filaments able to increase in length by at least 3%. The web is exposed to moisture such as steam at atmospheric pressure to effect the increase in length of the filaments while preventing the web changing in length or width. The filaments then lie at an angle of 45-90 to the mid-plane of the web. The web is heated to render the filaments adhesive so as to produce between 0.05 and 0.2 bonds per filament at the plane of greatest bonding. The preferred filaments are of polyhexamethylene adipamide sheathed with a copolymer of hexamethylene adipamide and epsilon caprolactam.
