Abstract
In a vacuum degassing vessel of the type having an intake pipe at its lower end for dipping into the metal to be treated, the refractory lining of the vessel merges at the top into a substantially cylindrical neck having a steel jacket, the neck being surrounded by an annular chamber having a closed top, and the vacuum connection being made through the outer wall of the chamber so that the direction of flow of the gases passing from the vessel to the vacuum connection is changed through at least 180 degrees whereby loss of heat and carryover of spray to the vacuum pipe is reduced. As shown in Fig. 1 the vessel 1 tapers to a neck 9 around which is a jacket forming an annular passage 10 from which leads the vacuum connection 4, the opening of neck 9 lying above the level of outlet 11. The opening may be closed between operations by means of plate 18 having refractory lining 19, while to obtain access to the interior of the vessel lid 13 may be pivoted at 15. In the modification of Fig. 6, the neck of the vessel extends almost to the roof 12, but has an opening 26 diametrically opposite to the vacuum connection 11.
