5-Nitroimidazole derivatives of the general formula wherein R is an alkyl radical, A is an alkylene radical and X is a halogen atom, are prepared by halogenation of the corresponding hydroxy compound of the general formula Suitable halogenating agents are phosphorus halides, thionyl halides and oxalyl halides. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,123,049.
