Abstract
A process for the preparation of benzodiazepine derivatives, characterized in that it consists of treating a quinazoline derivative of the general formula ** (See formula) ** wherein R1 represents hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, nitro, trifluoronctyl, cyano or lower alkylthio, R2 represents hydrogen or halogen, R3 represents lower alkyl and X represents halogen, or a 3-oxide thereof, under anhydrous conditions, with more than one mole of a strong base per mole of the quinazoline derivative, and, if desired, in treating a compound obtained, of the general formula ** (See formula) ** wherein R1 and R2 have the same meaning as set forth above and R4 represents a lower alkylodonic radical, or a 4-oxide thereof, with a reducing agent and, if desired, in transforming any product of the reaction into an acid addition salt.
