Improvements related to the manufacture of a melted cast refractory casting piece consisting essentially of at least 5% by weight of free carbon interspersed and interlaced with crystals of metal carbides oriented substantially irregularly, said piece analytically comprising of essentially (1) carbon melting, (2) at least 20% by weight of metal carbide forming substance selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, mixtures of first cited group of single metals and mixtures of the first mentioned group of metals and at least one element of a second group of metallic elements, selected from the group consisting of silicon, manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel, provided that the content of the aforementioned metals of the first group is not less than 10% by weight, (3) 0 to 15% by weight of at least one diluent selected from the group consisting of not more than 10% by weight of oxygen and not more than 10% by weight of nitrogen; and (4) a remainder, if any, of or 5% by weight of impurities.
