Abstract

<PICT:1044007/C4-C5/1> A thermally insulated reaction vessel used for the vapour phase hydrogenation of a hydrocarbon distillate oil (of Specification 1,031,717) comprises an inner wall enclosing the reaction zone, a pressure resistant outer wall in contact with the atmosphere, a space between the inner and outer wall, said space being divided into compartments by one or more partitions extending in a direction transversely of the width of the space and preventing substantially the flow of gas between the compartments they separate, the inner wall and each partition being so constructed or arranged that restricted communication exists between the reaction zone and all the compartments, each compartment being charged with a solid thermally insulating material that is permeable to gas. The words "permeable to gas" denote thermally insulating material in which there are present, or are formed during use, voids or fissures that permit gas to flow through the material by convection. Fig. 2 indicates a preferred embodiment wherein the restricted communication exists by connecting the compartments in parallel at the top, the compartments optionally having inlet pipes 14, 15 and 16 for a gas of low heat transfer, e.g. carbon dioxide which prevents loss of high heat transfer gas, e.g. hydrogen from the reaction zone and Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) indicate how the compartments may be connected in series to provide restricted communication along the length of each compartment. The reactor is preferably made of steel and the thermally insulating material may be brick or a free flowing particulate material, e.g. alumina.
