Abstract
Unsaturated hydrocarbons such as acetylene and ethylene are produced by subjecting paraffinic and/or olefinic hydrocarbons to partial combustion in a furnace having a pyrolysis chamber which is of closed curvilinear <PICT:0840664/IV(b)/1> configuration in cross-section and in which a substantially continuous stream of inert fluid is helically swirled around, and in contact with the inside wall of the pyrolysis chamber substantially to prevent deposition of carbon and tarry materials on the wall of the chamber. In one embodiment, a distributer ring 4 for fluid is positioned adjacent and below a disc-like distributer 1 for fuel and oxygen at the top of the combustion chamber 3. Venturi-shaped conduits 2 extend transversely through the disc distributer 1 to form outlets for the fuel and an annular enclosed conduit 6 is provided to supply water. Ring 4 is provided with helically arranged grooves 5, a connection being established between the annular conduit 6 and grooves 5 by an annular groove 7 of V-section. Water is fed under pressure through an inlet pipe 8 into the conduit 6 and is ejected into the combustion chamber 3 so as to form a substantially continuous screen which prevents the formation of carbon. Gaseous reaction products obtained by the partial combustion of the hydrocarbon are quenched by water which is injected transversely into the gases through a sprayer 9. The product contained 7.2% of acetylene. Specification 756,606 is referred to.
