Abstract
A continuous process for the production of high-purity aluminium chloride comprises continously passing chlorine into the foot of a vertical reaction vessel packed with a bed consisting of separate lumps of aluminium metal, continuously introducing lumps of aluminium into the top of the vessel so that impure aluminium chloride vapour formed towards the foot of the vessel is purified by fractionation as it rises through the bed, continuously removing the purified vapour from above the bed and condensing it within, but out of contact with the walls of, a separate chamber, the whole process being effected with exclusion of water vapour. The upper region of the reaction vessel may be externally cooled. The reaction may be initiated by preheating the lower region to 400 DEG C.-600 DEG C., the remainder of the vessel being maintained at nearly 200 DEG C. The aluminium may be supported on a grating such that ashes and impurities may collect below the grating and be periodically removed. Any molten aluminium will collect underneath the grating and react with incoming chlorine, thereby providing in part an automatic temperature control. Specification 678,563 is referred to.
