Improvements introduced in the preparation of phosphating compositions comprising an aqueous solution of a metal phosphate intended to produce an adherent phosphate coating on a surface composed of a ferrous metal, zinc or zinc alloy, said metal phosphate being an acid phosphate zinc, calcium or magnesium, or a mixture of the three or some of these phosphates, characterized in that the solution contains 0.01 to 0.1% by weight of simple fluoride ions and essentially does not contain cations, other than the hydrogenions, which have diffusion coefficients as large or greater than that of the lithium ion, and have a free acid content approaching the minimum required for the achievement of a coating action without excessive sludge formation.
