Abstract

The fruit is prewashed by means of immersion in a mixture of water and detergent or fungicide, with simultaneous showering and injection of pressurized air. The surface of the fruit is bleached and disinfected in a bath of water with chlorine and the fruit are rinsed and showered with pure water to remove remains of chlorine or ozone, and then the fruit is finally washed and air dried. The device consists of rafts 1, 5 and 6 separated by partitions 9 over which slides a conveyor belt 2 for the fruit, said belt having submerged belt sections and elevated sections depending on the stages of the process. Shower means 10 spray water and air under pressure onto the fruit. The invention is applicable to the continuous bleaching and disinfecting of nuts and fruit-and-vegetable produce.
