LA ELIMINACION DE LOS TUBOS Y LAMPARAS FLUORESCENTES CONSTITUYE UN PROBLEMA CADA VEZ MAS IMPORTANTE DEBIDO A QUE EN SU INTERIOR CONTIENEN VAPORES DE MERCURIO QUE PUEDEN SER EMITIDOS A LA ATMOSFERA TAN SOLO POR ROTURA DE ESTOS TUBOS. SI LA ROTURA SE PRODUCE DENTRO DE UN CILINDRO HERMETICAMENTE CERRADO, LA EMISION DE VAPORES DE MERCURIO ESTA CONTROLADA Y PUEDE IMPEDIRSE MEDIANTE LA ADSORCION DE ESTOS VAPORES EN UNA TORRE DE ADSORCION RELLENA DE PLATA METALICA QUE AMALGAMA EL MERCURIO. UNA VEZ SATURADA, ESTA PLATA SE TRATA EN UN DESTILADOR DE MERCURIO CON LO QUE SE RECUPERA EL MERCURIO CON UNA PUREZA DEL 99% Y LA PLATA PUEDE SER REUTILIZADA INDEFINIDAMENTE. UNOS FILTROS DE CARBON ACTIVO A LA SALIDA DE LA TORRE DE ADSORCION EVITAN LA POSIBLE EMISION DE MERCURIO EN EL CASO QUE EL ADSORBENTE DEJE DE CUMPLIR SU FUNCION POR SATURACION. LOS RESTOS METALICOS, POLVOS FLUORESCENTES Y EL VIDRIO QUE COMPONEN LOS TUBOS FLUORESCENTES PUEDEN SER RECUPERADOS POR SIMULTANEAS OPERACIONES DE TRITURACION Y CRIBADO.
