Abstract
Composite tile is new. The novel composite tile has a visible face made of natural stone, and comprises a plate of reduced thickness natural stone (preferably marble), firmly fixed to reinforce and stiffen the support layer by means of an adhesive. The supporting layer is made of a lightweight plate of reduced thickness, composed of a mixture of cement, silica and cellulose fibers. The fiber-reinforced cement is formed by pressing and curing the mixture in an autoclave including sand, dimensional stability agents and additives or waterproofing agents incorporated at the surfaces of the layer exposed within the tile. The mixture has a fiber and cement content sufficiently high enough to allow for cutting and manipulating operations while joining to the natural stone part, and adjusted in such manner so as to combine elevated density, reduction of humidifying mobility and low bending resistance of the support layer joined to the plate of natural stone, and ensure the high stability of the joint. The adhesive is preferably a bicomponent epoxy resin, containing 5% of micro-nodules or micro-granules (which can be of glass or cellulose fibers) of average diameter 0.10 mm. Independent claims are also included for: 1) the production of the composite tile, comprising: a) cutting, out of a natural stone block, plates of thickness more than twice as large as the final thickness of natural stone layer b) joining firmly both faces of the cut plate with layers of support as claimed, using an adhesive and pressure, to form a unit comprising a natural stone layer sandwiched between two support layers, and curing the adhesive c) cutting the obtained unit into two, through the middle of the natural stone layer, to produce two composite tiles with natural stone faces and d) smoothing and polishing the natural stone faces and 2) the method of production of the natural stone/support layer units, comprising joining natural stone layers and support layers by means of curing the adhesive layers between them by heating (preferably to 50-60degreesC) for a pre-determined period (preferably for 12 minutes). There is optional stacking of units into piles, which are firmly secured together to prevent movement of the natural stone layers in relation to the support layers before the curing of the adhesive by e.g. strings of rapid contact glue, and/or protected by peripheral strings of e.g. wax (of height 3 mm and depth 1-1.2 mm) to prevent pressing out of adhesive during compression stage, using vertically applied pressure.
