Abstract
The surface design of ceramic workpieces is achieved, during the mfg. process by subjecting it to a flame which burns a mixture of fuel gas and oxygen or a gas containing oxygen. After the workpiece has been fired, it is heated to a temp. above 500 deg.C before the surface is treated with the flame. The burner, for the surface flame treatment, is located at the conveyor rails for the workpieces, where they travel through the whole mfg. process. The flame, fueled by an oxy-acetylene mixture, according to the proportions, delivers a flame heat of 2500-3200 deg.C and the burner head is moved over the ceramic workpiece at a gap of about 5mm from its surface, equally over the whole surface area, to give it a roughened and non-slip surface. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is for mfg. tiles and plate material for floors and walls, with a structured surface roughness. The surface treatment gives the ceramic material a new surface character, without affecting the moulding or embossing processes on the ceramic mass.
