Abstract

The mussel flesh, already removed from its shells, is placed on a conveyor belt 1 with perforations 4 such that the beards which pass via the holes 4 are pulled by a train of rollers distributed in pairs and which rotate in opposite directions. The improvements consist of the fact that each pair of tractor rollers carries, backing onto it externally, another pair of secondary rollers 6 which rotate in the same direction as the first roller 5, with which they are tangential, thus cleaning the periphery of the primary roller of beards. The tractor rollers 5' of the later half of the perforated belt 1 are of smaller diameter than those found at the start, thus allowing detachment of beards of short length. Between the groups of primary rollers 5 and secondary rollers 6 are placed vibrators 9 for distributing the flesh or bodies of the animal over the surface of the belt 1. The rollers are knurled in a helical manner and, as they are all drive rollers, they do not suffer wear through abrasion. Provision has also been made for the existence of a device for selecting or separating out the flesh which has not been debearded in order to send it back once again to the entry of the machine, for it to be recycled.
