Abstract

A process for preparing polyurethane foam articles of the type comprising a central support area and two side rolls, said central support area comprising layers of firm foam and soft foam and said side rolls comprising zones of firm foam encapsulated by a soft foam, by introducing two or more polyurethane foam formulations into a mould corresponding to the shape of said article comprises: (1) introducing a soft foam formulation into the side roll parts of the mould and allowing it to rise, (2) introducing a hard foam formulation into the central support part of the mould and allowing it to rise, (3) introducing a hard foam formulation into the rising soft foam formulation in the side roll parts of the mould when the soft foam formulation has expanded between 100% and 1400% of its original Volume, so that the hard foam formulation is encapsulated by the soft foam, (4) introducing a soft foam formulation into the rising hard foam formulation in the central support part when the hard foam formulation has risen between 10 and 80% of its potential rise under conditions where the soft foam for mulation passes through the hard. The articles may be the seat or back portions of automobile seats.
