Abstract

Liq. dye compsn. comprises (1) at least one sulphur dye (A) in leuco form and (2) a reducing agent for (A), i.e. a sulphide formed in situ. or derived from the thionation reaction, or a reducing sugar. The compsn. contains less than 3(esp. 1-2.5)wt.% inorganic sulphide, based on total compsn. The compsn. contains an alkali (esp. alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or phosphate) at 1-17wt.%. The reduced (A) content is 8.5-40wt.% and total inorganic sulphide is 0-18.5 (1-14)wt.% based on reduced (A). (A) is reduced in aq. alkaline medium contg. the reducing agent (esp. sugar), pref. at 60-110 (70-95)deg C. The (A) being reduced is made by oxidising, in an aq. or alkaline medium, the product of a standard thionation reaction. Pref. the sulphur dye is washed to eliminate inorganic salts before addn. to the redn. medium. Some dyes, e.g. C.I. Sulphur Black 1 and 2, require no added reducing agent since reaction of the alkali with associated sulphur generates enough sulphide in situ.
