Abstract

The system has two air (L) compressors (2,3) in series. The hot gases (R) from the steam generator furnace are passed through a gas turbine (7) which drives the second stage compressor (3) and also an electrical machine (13). The turbine exhaust passes through an air preheater (5) and is then applied to another gas turbine (9) driving the initial stage compressor (2). The gas from this turbine is exhausted into the flue (10). - The electrical machine (13) acts as motor or generator. It is used when starting up the furnace to provide air flow by driving the compressor (3), and can be used to generate power during normal operation so making use of waste heat.
