Abstract
A ceramic heating pipe 10 for electric heating of an industrial furnace, is formed so that the inner space of the heating pipe can be placed under an inert (nitrogen or argon) gas pressure. Gas may be supplied from both ends of the pipe. The pipe is of porous nature to allow gas to exit via its surface and protect the pipe from the effects of the heated material. Additional slots may be provided to increase the gas flow to effect as a gas supply to the furnace. Alternatively the pipe may be glazed to reduce gas flow.
