Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for constructing a building, a construction assembly and a building comprising such a construction assembly.
- the invention also relates to the use of an interlockable construction panel in the method, a construction assembly and a building according to the invention.
- the present invention is aimed at obviating or at least reducing the aforementioned problems by providing a method for constructing a building, the method comprising: providing a number of interlockable construction panels, wherein each construction panel comprises a number of side edges and wherein at least one of the number of side edges comprises one or more indentations and/or projections that are configured to provide a mating and interlocking connection with respectively projections and/or indentations of a second or further construction panel; forming a box-like structure comprising a floor, a ceiling and at least two walls by:
- An advantage of the method for constructing a building according to the invention is that it provides a more rigid building compared to buildings of a traditional timber frame construction. This is mainly due to the fact that the panels within the wall, the ceiling or the floor are interlocking in many places and that the walls, ceiling and floor are similarly connected with an interlocking connection to form the box-like structure.
- the boxlike structure, or simply the box allows for a seamless transition between the constructive elements both in terms of physical appearance and the transition of ferees in the building.
- both horizontal and vertical forces are transferred via the floor or ceiling subset to the wall subset or wall subsets and subsequently to the foundation of the building.
- the stabilization assembly is capable of effectively and efficiently mitigating forces (i.e. stress) on the building to the foundation.
- a further advantage of the method according to the invention is that the individual interlockable construction panels can easily be connected to each other due to the ‘puzzlelike’ side edges thereof. This allows them to be coupled in a locking manner in a quick and efficient way that increases building speed.
- box-like structure can be provided in standardized form, yet may also easily be adapted to custom shapes, sizes and forms for specific buildings. Therefore, an improved flexibility with regard to the shape of a (wooden) building is realized.
- the number of interlockable construction panels comprises several subsets, which include a floor subset, a ceiling subset and at least two wall subsets in order to create a box-like structure.
- the number of interlockable construction panels comprises at least two wall subsets, each of which is used for the construction of a wall of the building.
- the interlockable construction panels of the various subsets may be similar to each other or may differ from each other with respect to size and/or the shape of the indentations and/or the shape of the projections provided on the side edges thereof.
- the number of side edges that is provided with indentations and/or projections may also vary for different interlockable wall panels.
- each of the one or more indentations of a side edge of an interlockable construction panel is configured to receive an associated projection of the one or more projections of a second or further interlockable construction panel in a mating and interlocking connection.
- the one or more projections of a side edge of an interlockable construction panel is configured to be inserted into an associated indentation of the one or more projections of the second or further interlockable construction panel in a mating and interlocking connection.
- the number and shape of projections and indentations of a first interlockable construction panel is adapted to the number of the indentations and projections of the interlockable construction panel to which the first panel is configured to be connected.
- the projections on a side edge of a interlockable construction panel may also be formed by providing indentations in the side edge thereof.
- the indentations on a side edge of a interlockable construction panel may also be formed by providing projections in the side edge thereof.
- the one or more indentations extend inwardly from the respective side edge and/or the one or more projections extend outwardly from the respective side edge.
- An advantage of providing the projections and indentations in-plane with the planar surface of the interlockable construction panels is that, when viewed along the surface of the wall, ceiling or floor, the projections and indentations do not extend above the surface yet are line therewith. This provides for a relatively smooth surface.
- the interlockable construction panel to be connected to by means of sliding, which preferably is performed by sliding the panels into each other in an out-of-plane direction.
- one or more of the number of side edges of at least one interlockable construction panel is provided with an alternating pattern of indentations and projections, wherein the pattern of indentations and projections is adapted to match the pattern of indentations and projections on a side edge of an interlockable construction panel to which it is to be connected.
- An advantage of an alternating pattern is that it provides a large connection surface between the interlockable construction panels that are connected to each other.
- the points of connection between the two interlockable construction panels can be spread along the entire length of the side edge.
- a further advantage is that an alternating pattern can easily be manufactured in an automated environment, such as a prefabrication factory.
- the method may further comprise the step of connecting at least part of the interlockable construction panels of each wall subset to at least part of the interlockable construction panels of at least one other wall subset.
- the various wall subsets are preferably also interconnected with each other using the projections and indentations on the side edges thereof. This provides an increased rigidity and also a substantially seamless wall.
- the projections and indentations (and more preferably the pattern thereof) on the side edge of interlockable construction panels of the first wall subset that is to be connected to the interlockable construction panels of the second wall subset match the projections and indentations (and more preferably the pattern thereof) on the side edge of the interlockable construction panels of the second wall subset to provide the mating and locking connection.
- the shape of the projections and indentations forming a connection between interlockable construction panels of different subsets is different from the shape of the projections and indentations forming a connection between interlockable construction panels within a subset. It is preferred that the edges of the interlockable construction panels on the edges of the subsets, i.e. the wall edge, the ceiling and the floor edge, are provided with a different type, i.e. a different shape of projections and indentations.
- An advantage is that, by adapting the shape, the strength of the connection can be optimized.
- the direction in which the connection is made (for example in-plane or out-of-plane), can also be optimized by choosing a particular shape.
- the different subsets are, in this application, the ceiling, the floor and each of the individual walls of the building.
- the latter may range from two walls upwards to any number of walls in a building.
- the number of walls of a residential dwelling is three, four or five, although more walls is possible.
- the method may comprise one or more of the steps of: connecting at least part of the interlockable construction panels of at least one wall subset with at least part of the interlockable construction panels of the floor subset and/or the ceiling subset under an angle a with a plane formed by the first or the second direction; and/or connecting at least part of the interlockable construction panels of a first wall subset with at least part of the interlockable construction panels of a second wall subset under an angle p.
- An advantage of the method according to the invention is that it allows the walls to be positioned under angle with each other and/or with the floor and/or ceiling. As a result, the freedom of design of the building using the method according to the invention is very high and substantially higher than with traditional wooden buildings, such as timber frame constructions.
- a further advantage of the method according to the invention is that, by adapting the shape of the projections and indentations, the interlockable construction panels of the different subsets can, even at an angle, seamlessly be connected with each other.
- the shape of the projections and indentations forming a connection between interlockable construction panels having an angle a and/or with respect to each other is different from the shape of the projections and indentations forming a connection between interlockable construction panels that are in plane with each other.
- An advantage of this embodiment is that the shape of the projections and indentations at a connection with an angle can be adapted to the specific need of the connection to provide a seamless and strong connection. This provides a high amount of flexibility in the design of the building. Simultaneously, the shape of projections and indentations of the in-plane connections are optimized to provide a strong and seamless connection therebetween.
- in-plane means a connection or location in a common plane.
- the angle a is in the range of 60° - 120°, preferably in the range of 70° - 110°, even more preferably in the range of 80° - 100° and most preferably about 90°
- the angle p is in the range of 5° - 175°, preferably in the range of 45° - 135°, more preferably in the range of 70° - 110°, even more preferably in the range of 80° - 100° and most preferably about 90°
- An advantage of the method according to the invention is that a wide range of angles can be applied between the various construction elements (i.e. walls, ceiling and/or floor).
- the method may further comprise the steps of: providing one or more supports, wherein the one or more supports preferably are a support frame, more preferably are a timber support frame; and connecting at least part of the interlockable construction panels of each of the at least two wall subsets to at least one of the one or more supports.
- the box-like structure that is formed in the method according to the invention may be strengthened even further by applying one or more supports, which preferably are shaped as a timber frame.
- the supports, preferably the timber frame allow interlockable construction panels with a relative low thickness to be used, while still providing a highly rigid and strong construction. Therewith, the use of a timber frame reduces the (overall) amount of material needed to construct the building.
- the method may further comprise one or more of the steps of: providing a door and/or windows to the box-like structure, wherein the step is optionally preceded by providing a door opening and/or window openings in one or more walls of the box-like structure; insulating one or more of the walls, the ceiling and/or the floor of the box-like structure; and/or building a second floor on the ceiling of the box-like structure, wherein the second floor preferably comprises a second box-like structure.
- An advantage of the method according to the invention is that a number of box-like structures may be provided, which can easily be combined into a building.
- the method simultaneously allows door and/or windows to be placed in a relatively easy manner by removing part of the interlockable construction panels at the position of the door and/or windows without significantly reducing the rigidity and strength of the building.
- each side edge of each construction panel may be provided with indentations and/or projections.
- An advantage of providing all side edges with indentations and/or projections is that each side of the interlockable construction panels is interlocked with another one of the interlockable construction panels, thus providing a high strength and rigidity.
- the one or more projections when viewed from the side edge outwardly, have a T-shape, a rectangular shape, a trapezoid shape, preferably an (isosceles) trapezoid shape and/or a square shape, and/or the one or more indentations, when viewed from the side edge inwardly, have a T-shape, a rectangular shape, a trapezoid shape, preferably an (isosceles) trapezoid shape and/or a square shape.
- T-shape and the trapezoid (or dovetail) shape allows a seamless fit with a corresponding (but oppositely shaped) indentation of a second or further interlockable construction panel, resulting in a rigid connection that restricts in-plane movement. It also provides a high amount of out-of-plane stability.
- the T-shape and the trapezoid shape are highly resistant to disassociation of the connection, especially compared to square and rectangular shapes.
- each construction panel has a length and a width that define a construction panel surface and a thickness.
- the one or more connections having an angle a and/or p comprise T-shaped or trapezoid shaped, preferably isosceles trapezoid shaped, projections and indentations.
- the one or more connections of interlockable construction panels between different subsets comprise T-shaped, trapezoid shaped, preferably isosceles trapezoid shaped, or square-shaped projections and indentations, and the one or more connections between interlockable construction panels within subsets comprise trapezoid shaped projections and indentations.
- the invention further relates to a construction assembly for constructing a building, the assembly comprising: a number of interlockable construction panels, wherein each construction panel comprises a number of side edges, and wherein at least one of the number of side edges comprises one or more indentations and/or projections that are configured to provide a mating and interlocking connection with respectively projections and/or indentations of a second or further construction panel; wherein the number of interlockable construction panels comprises a floor subset, a ceiling subset and at least two wall subsets, and wherein: the floor subset comprises one or more interlockable construction panels that are connectable to each other to build a floor; at least two wall subsets each comprise one or more interlockable construction panels, wherein the interlockable construction panels of each wall subset are connectable to each other and to the floor subset to build a wall; and the ceiling subset comprises one or more interlockable construction panels that are connectable to each other and to at least part of the interlockable construction panels of the at least two wall sub
- the construction assembly according to the invention has similar effects and advantages as the method according to the invention.
- the embodiments mentioned for the method according to the invention can also be used, either alone or in combination, in the construction assembly according to the invention.
- An advantage of the construction assembly according to the invention is that it provides a more rigid building compared to buildings with traditional timber frame construction. This is mainly due to the box-like structure that is formed using the interlockable construction panels. The fact that the panels within a wall, the ceiling or the floor are interlocking in many places and that the walls, ceiling and floor are similarly connected with an interlocking connection create a strong and rigid construction. Therewith, the box-like structure, or simply the box, allows for a seamless transition between the constructive elements both in terms of physical appearance and the transition of forces in the building.
- a further advantage of the assembly according to the invention is that the individual interlockable construction panels can easily be connected to each other due to the ‘puzzlelike’ side edges thereof. This allows them to be coupled in a locking manner in a quick and efficient way that increases building speed. This is even further enhanced if the projections and indentations are adapted to the orientation and location of the connection to be formed. For a connection between different subsets (i.e. a floor and a wall) another shape of projections and indentations may be used that for in-plane (i.e. in floor-floor) connections.
- At least part of the interlockable construction panels of each wall subset is connectable to one or more interlockable construction panels of at least one other wall subset.
- the shape of the projections and indentations that are configured to form a connection between interlockable construction panels of different subsets is different than the shape of the projections and indentations that are configured to connect interlockable construction panels within a subset.
- edges of the interlockable construction panels on the edges of the subsets i.e. the wall edge, the ceiling and the floor edge, are provided with a different type, i.e. a different shape of projections and indentations.
- the different subsets are, in this application, the ceiling, the floor and each of the individual walls of the building.
- the latter may range from two walls upwards to any number of walls in a building.
- the number of walls of a residential dwelling is three, four or five, although more walls is possible.
- the one or more projections when viewed from the side edge outwardly, have one of: a T-shape, a rectangular shape, a trapezoid shape, preferably an (isosceles) trapezoid shape and/or a square shape, and/or the one or more indentations, when viewed from the side edge inwardly, have one of: a T-shape, a rectangular shape, a trapezoid shape, preferably an (isosceles) trapezoid shape and/or a square shape.
- the assembly further may comprise one or more supports, and the one or more supports preferably are a support frame, and more preferably are a timber support frame.
- the one or more supports are configured to be connected to at least part of the interlockable construction panels of the at least two wall subsets.
- the box-like structure of the construction assembly may be strengthened even further by applying one or more supports, which preferably are shaped as a timber frame.
- the supports preferably the timber frame, allow interlockable construction panels with a relative low thickness to be used, while still providing a highly rigid and strong construction. Therewith, the use of a timber frame reduces the (overall) amount of material needed to construct the building.

- An advantage of providing all side edges with indentations and/or projections is that each side of the interlockable construction panels is interlocked with another one of the interlockable construction panels, thus providing a high strength and rigidity.
- the interlockable construction panels of the floor subset are, in use, configured to extend in a plane defined by a first and a second direction, and the interlockable construction panels of at least two wall subsets are configured to be connected to the floor subset and to at least part of the ceiling subset under an angle a with the plane; and/or at least part of the interlockable construction panels of a first wall subset are configured to be connected with at least part of the interlockable construction panels of a second wall subset under an angle p.
- An advantage of the method according to the invention is that it allows the walls to be positioned under angle with each other and/or with the floor and/or ceiling.
