- flexographic printing machines utilize so-called anilox rolls for taking up ink.
- Anilox rolls have engraved dimples on their surface in which the ink is collected and then transferred to a printing substrate.
- Flexographic printing is especially suited for uneven printing substrates due to the flexibility of the dimples.
- Intaglio printing machines use gravure cylinders comprising depressions for taking up and transferring the ink to the printing substrate. Intaglio printing is especially suitable for high throughput applications.
- These printing machines are highly complex with a high number of individual components that need to by regularly handled for maintenance or exchange. Usually, a printing machine operator manually handles those components or printing tools in order to load or unload them into the printing machine. In the alternative, a cost expensive automated delivery system has to be provided, e.g. with a fully automated robotic arm.
- a printing assembly having a printing machine with a printing module and a printing tool handling unit configured for moving printing tools to and from the printing module, wherein the printing tool handling unit comprises a manually operated movable arm with a vacuum suction device that is configured to hold and release the printing tool.
- the operator thus is enabled to load or unload printing tools in an ergonomically easy way, as the vacuum suction device allows to securely grip the printing tool to be handled, while the weight of the heavy load is carried by the moveable arm that also performs the necessary lifting.
- the operator only has to direct the arm to the loading or unloading point, respectively.
- the vacuum suction device preferably has an operating handle to manually activate the vacuum action and to lock and unlock the vacuum suction device to and from the printing tool, respectively.
- the mobile arm preferably has a manually operated activation device to move the arm to the desired position.
- the vacuum suction device may be arranged for moving in a handling plane. This allows to reach any loading or unloading position on the printing machine and to reach e.g. a separate supply rack for the printing tool with which the printing tool is moved to and from the printing machine.
- a motion range in a handling plane can be achieved, for instance, by mounting the arm linearly displaceable in front of the printing module.
- a rail system is provided on which the arm is mounted for linear displacement along a displacement direction perpendicular to the vertical direction.
- a single rail on which the arm is mounted can be placed at the upper end of the handling plane, extending along the complete handling plane.
- the vacuum suction device When, additionally, the vacuum suction device is moveable in vertical direction along the arm, any position in the handling plane is easily reachable.
- the arm e.g. only needs to be configured to elongate and contract along the vertical direction.
- the arm may comprises a pneumatic cylinder or a hydraulic cylinder.
- the vacuum suction device is pivotally arranged at the end of the arm to let the operator move the respective printing tool into the correct loading position or to place it in the correct orientation on the supply rack.
- the printing tools may comprise anilox rollers, plate cylinder, CFK adapters, printing sleeves, doctor blade chambers and winder shafts as well as any other components needing to be replaced or serviced.
- the only requirement is a sufficiently big area on the component to attach the vacuum suction device.
- the printing machine is e.g. a central impression flexographic printing press, where several printing tools are arranged in a circle in the printing module. All components are easily in reach from a handling plane.
- the invention is also usable with other types of printing machines.
- the printing tool handling unit may be a unit separate from the printing machine that is only placed at the printing machine when handling of printing tools is necessary.
- the printing tool handling unit may be permanently fixed to the printing machine and e.g. the arm parked in a position where it is not in the way for the normal operation of the printing machine.
- Figure 1 shows a printing assembly 10 with a printing machine 12 and a printing tool handling unit 14.
- the printing machine 12 is a central impression flexographic printing machine.
- the printing tool handling unit 14 may be combined with any suitable type of printing machine.
- the printing machine 12 has a printing module 16 that is equipped with several printing tools 18 (only hinted at in Fig. 1 ) arranged in a circle around a central impression cylinder (not shown).
- Printing tools 18 are e.g. anilox rollers, plate cylinder, CFK adapters, printing sleeves, doctor blade chambers and winder shafts or any other components that need to be loaded into or unloaded from the printing machine 12.
- the printing tool handling unit 14 is configured to move printing tools to and from the printing module 16 of the printing machine 12.
- a manually operated arm 20 with a vacuum suction device 22 at its lower end 24 is mounted with its opposed end 26 at a horizontally extending rail system 28.
- the rail system 28 is in this example fixedly mounted at the printing machine 12.
- the arm 20 is linearly displaceable along a rail of the rail system 28.
- the arm 20 is shown in three different positions. Usually, only one single arm 20 is provided on the rail system 28.
- the rail system 28 is part of a mobile maintenance station that is separate from the printing machine 12 and is brought only to the printing machine 12 when printing tools 18 need handling.
- the vacuum suction device 22 is pivotally mounted at the end 24 of the arm 20 so that it can be rotated over a wide angle range.
- the arm 20 comprises a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 30 that can assume different lengths.
- the arm 20 is configured in this example only for motion in vertical directing V by contracting or elongating and for a linear translation along the rail system 28.
- the vacuum suction device 22 is arranged in a way that any position in a handling plane extending in front of the printing module 16 and covering all of the loading positions on the printing machine 12 can be reached.
- the vacuum suction device 22 can be placed in any desired height and position perpendicular to the vertical direction V in the handling plane. Therefore, every printing tool 18 in the printing module 16 is accessible by the vacuum suction device 22.
- the vacuum suction device 22 can be attached to any smooth outer surface 32 of a printing tool 18 (see Fig. 2 ).
- the printing tool 18 is transported to the printing machine 12, e.g. on a supply rack (not shown).
- An operator attaches the vacuum suction device 22 to the printing tool 18 at an appropriate smooth surface 32, using a manual operating handle 34 on the vacuum suction device 22 to pivot the vacuum suction device 22 into the correct position and to apply vacuum to attach the vacuum suction device 22 to the printing tool 18.
- the operator pivots the printing tool 18 into the desired orientation and slides the printing tool 18 into the appropriate receptacle 38.
- the complete weight of the printing tool 18 is carried by the arm 20.
- the operator needs only move the printing tool 18 with the handle 34 and the activation device 36. As every motion of the printing tool 18 is directed exclusively manually by the operator, no fully automated robotic system is needed.
