Derartige Vorrichtungen, die auch als Lockenwickler bezeichnet werden, sind in unterschiedlichen Ausführungen bekannt. So werden für physikalische Umformungen des Haares sogenannte Volumenwickler eingesetzt, die als Hohlzylinder ausgebildet sind und einen Durchmesser von etwa 3 bis 7 cm aufweisen. Einzelne nasse Haarsträhnen werden entsprechend der gewünschten Fallrichtung des Haares parallel auf die Volumenwickler aufgewickelt und dort fixiert, indem Feststecknadeln durch Durchbrechungen in der Mantelfläche der Volumenwickler hindurchgesteckt werden. Hierbei ist besonders darauf zu achten, dass es durch die Feststecknadeln nicht zu Verletzungen der Kopfhaut kommt. Nach Trocknung des Haars, beispielsweise unter Zuhilfenahme einer Trockenhaube, werden die Volumenwickler aus dem Haar entfernt. Das Aufwickeln der Haarsträhnen auf die kleinen Wickler erfordert eine hohe Präzision und viel Erfahrung. So ist darauf zu achten, dass das Haar zunächst sehr präzise gescheitelt wird und dass beim Aufwickeln eine gleichmäßige Spannung auf das Haar ausgeübt wird. Sodann wird die Haarsträhne, beispielsweise spiralförmig, solange um den zylindrischen Wickelkörper herumgeführt, bis sie nahezu vollständig auf diesen aufgewickelt ist.
