Abstract

The invention relates to a wet pallet which comprises a flat container (1) having a peripheral rim and which contains water (4). A water retaining structure (2), preferably a sponge or a flat foam, is arranged to become wet by contact and absorption of the water available in the flat container. A sheet of water-permeable paper (3) is positioned on the retaining structure (2), and which supports water-based paint (5). The water-permeable sheet of paper (3) is a one-sided coated paper having a lower layer (8) of paper with water permeability arranged to receive water from the retaining structure (2) , and a top layer (6) with lower permeability to water in contact with the paint (5).

Description

The present invention relates to a wet palette which aims to extend the life of a paint during a painting session or between painting sessions.

In general, a wet palette comprises a box comprising a foam or sponge saturated with water which, by capillary action, passes through a layer of paper on which a paint is positioned. The paint is then kept wet "in the open air" during the painting session but also between painting sessions with a cover.

We know for example the American patent US3885666A disclosing a storage device for pallets containing air-drying paints. This device comprises a housing or plastic container for disposable pallets which is equipped with protrusions which hold the pallets in place to prevent color smearing regardless of the orientation of the stored enclosure.

We also know WO03011611 which relates to an airtight palette for acrylic paints for hermetically maintaining acrylic paints in a relatively soft state in the palette for a desired period of time. This pallet consists of a body comprising a sealing cover. A cellular paint preservation unit and a color mixing unit are placed separately in the body. Hermetic sealing means are placed at the joint between the body and the cover, so as to seal the joint, in order to hermetically keep acrylic paints presented in the pallet, thus preventing hardening thereof. The hermetic sealing means comprise hinged flanges, placed along the edge of the cover and latches for flanges placed along the upper edge of the body, at positions corresponding to the flanges, so as to hook the flanges respectively.

US6302267B1 describes a pallet system which is intended for the storage and preservation of substances such as paint or glue, and for maintaining these substances in a usable state of humidity for long periods of time. The pallet system features a sealable open box structure to contain a moisture retaining structure (preferably a flat wood fiber sponge) whose cellular structure provides a "wicking effect", thereby maintaining the paint or glue in a wet state. A sheet of water-permeable paper, placed on top of the moisture-retaining structure, is provided to support a plurality of paint or glue pads. A cover is also provided to seal the structure of the open box.

FR557090A concerns a palette for moist colors. Painters use moist colors for water painting, such as, for example, those known as tempera colors which must be kept wet for their use. The Moist Color Palette is constructed to provide such colors with the moisture they need when used by the artist. This pallet is essentially constituted by a preferably metal plate, aluminum for example, cut in any shape and any desired dimensions and forming a rigid support on which is placed a spongy material such as sheet, felt or other, covered on its outer face with a smooth fabric, this spongy material and the fabric which covers it being fixed to the metal support plate by the edges of the latter. The spongy material is intended to absorb a certain quantity of water which is distributed by capillary action over the entire surface of the smooth fabric which covers it and which supports moist colors, so that the latter are thus maintained in a state of humidity. required for their employment.

The problem of the solutions of the state of the art comprising a water-permeable paper are manifold and depend on the papers used, which may have one or more of these defects. Laying the paper on the wet surface is difficult and very often the sheet of paper curls because the paper fibers in contact with the water relax.

In addition, relatively fragile, the paper ends up degrading until it forms small pieces of paper, like fine dust.

Depending on the paint, in particular for a very fine paint, the fact of "stirring" the paint makes it penetrate into the paper which has the effect of staining the wet layer such as a sponge or foam. In addition to losing paint, sponge or foam is stained and the paper is slightly transparent, the work surface is therefore partially soiled and becomes unusable, making the paper difficult to clean and reusable. These papers lead to overconsumption of paint, difficulty in cleaning and reusing these papers, and consequently degradation of sponges and foams.

Depending on the papers used, particularly greaseproof papers, paint or water tends to clump together on the surface, making mixing and using pallets difficult. This is due to too low surface energy.

The object of the present invention is to provide a wet palette capable of keeping the paint wet as long as possible during a painting session and also between painting sessions to prevent the layer of paper from deteriorating which would alter the paint. paint quality to prevent paint and pigments from penetrating the permeable paper, allowing paints to be worked with the finest pigments, or to work with thin layers of paint, clean the paper easily, and be able to reuse it in the best conditions.

In accordance with the invention, the wet pallet comprises a flat container having a peripheral rim and which, in its operational state, comprises water, a water-retaining structure, preferably a sponge or a flat foam, for s '' moisten by contact and absorption of the water available in the flat container, and a sheet of water-permeable paper positioned on the retaining structure, and which in its operational state, is in contact with paint to water base supported by the pallet. According to the invention, the sheet of water-permeable paper is a paper coated preferably on one side comprising a lower layer of paper with a water permeability arranged to receive water from the retaining structure, and a top layer with lower water permeability, the top layer in its operational state being in contact with the paint.

In a preferred embodiment, a wet pallet consists of a box comprising a special polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foam saturated with water. which, by capillary action, passes through a layer of paper on which a painting is positioned.

In another embodiment, the sheet of paper used is a coated paper whose opacity is greater than 80% when the paper is dry or wet.

In another embodiment, the coated sheet of paper has fibers that provide wet strength to the sheet so that the sheet does not fall apart. This wet strength can also be achieved by using a wet strength treatment (WRC) to increase the strength of the paper.

In one embodiment, the retaining structure and the coated paper have identical shapes, and are for example embossed so as to create moisturizing bowls arranged to receive a paint, in particular liquid.

In one embodiment, the wet water retaining structure is a flat smooth foam, in particular a special polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foam or a polyurethane foam, which has the required characteristics such as high absorption capacity, limiting the development of mold and with a very smooth surface.

The water-permeable paper is a coated paper on one side, coating which allows a better permeability of the paper in order to work with paints with particles and very fine pigments, thanks to the coating which gives a microporous structure to the paper in order to limit the absorption of paint and pigments in the paper, but still allowing moisture to pass through.

In one embodiment, the coated sheet of paper is directional, that is, the paint can only be applied to the top layer of the coated portion of the sheet.

Preferably, the sheet of water-permeable paper has a weight of between 30g and 100g, typically 50g and 100g, the coated paper being printable for printing guides or patterns.

The wet palette according to the invention is used just as much for acrylic paint as for gouache or any type of water-based paint. The palette is also usable with oil paints, if the water is replaced with the correct solvent.

In one embodiment, the sheet of water-permeable paper has varnish on the top side. Moreover, the upper face is optionally smoothed.

In one embodiment, the sheet of water permeable paper has a bottom layer with a coating-like treatment to control moisture penetration into the paper, and a coating on the top side.

As shown in figure 1 , the wet pallet comprises a flat container 1 comprising a peripheral rim which, in its operational state, contains water 4. In this example, the foam of the retaining structure 2 is saturated with water 4 by capillary action, and the water passes through the sheet of coated paper 3 and hydrates the paint 5, in particular of the acrylic type. The paint is therefore kept wet "open" during the painting session, which allows it to be used beyond a few hours.

In contact with water, ordinary paper relaxes and curls. It becomes relatively fragile and crumbles over time. Small pieces of paper can be found in the painting. The coated paper 3 according to the invention makes it possible to avoid these drawbacks.

In another comparative example not shown, a sheet of thin, uncoated paper would allow paint to penetrate which would damage the foam. In addition, the sheet of coated paper 3 must be resistant to the wet state (REH) in order to prevent it from tearing, which would make it unusable.

Preferably, this sheet of paper 3 must be varnished on its external side with the upper layer 6.

Paper with a grammage between 30 or even 50 and 100 should be used, depending on the paint used.

Of course, the wet palette according to the invention can also include a case or the like making it possible to seal the paint 5 hermetically outside the periods of the painting sessions when the artist is not painting.
