Description
- The present disclosure relates to a packing material that combines a plurality of segments constituting a smoking article.
- In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for alternative methods of overcoming the shortcomings of general smoking articles. For example, there is an increasing demand for a method of generating an aerosol by heating an aerosol-generating material in a smoking article rather than a method of burning a smoking article to produce an aerosol. Accordingly, research into a heating-type smoking article or a heating-type aerosol-generating apparatus has been actively conducted.
- The existing combustion-type smoking articles are generally composed of a smoking material section and a filter section. Referring to an existing combustion-
type smoking article 10 shown inFIG. 1 , a cylindrical first rod section is formed as asmoking material section 100 is wrapped by afirst cover 100a, and a cylindrical second rod section is formed as a filter section (i.e., a plurality offilters 110 and 120) is wrapped by one or more 110a, 120a, and 130. The first rod section and the second rod section are coupled to each other by asecond covers tip paper 140 wrapping a portion of the first rod section and the entire second rod section. - The length of the
smoking material section 100 in the existing combustion-type smoking article 10 is generally about 57 mm, and the length of the filter section including the plurality of 110 and 120 is about 27 mm. In general, a region where a user bites the smokingfilters article 10 when smoking is located about 12 mm from the end of the filter section, and thus, when the filter portion includes the plurality of 110 and 120, the region where a user bites the smokingfilters article 10 when smoking may correspond to a position where the plurality of 110 and 120 abut each other. However, even if the region where a user bites the smokingfilters article 10 when smoking corresponds to the position where the plurality of 110 and 120 abut each other, a portion corresponding to the plurality offilters 110 and 120 may not be broken because thefilters tip paper 140 surrounds the plurality of 110 and 120 as a whole.filters - As described above, the
tip paper 140 has an advantage of preventing the filter section including the 110 and 120 from being broken. However, in order to manufacture thefilters smoking article 10 including thetip paper 140, three or more layers of paper materials (i.e., the 110a, 120a, and 130 and the tip paper 140) have to be provided, and thus, the manufacturing process of thesecond covers smoking article 10 is complicated and the cost of thesmoking article 10 is high. Accordingly, there is a need for a technology that simplifies the manufacturing process of a smoking article and reduces the manufacturing cost thereof.
WO 2016/156219 A1 relates to an electrically heated aerosol-generating article comprising an aerosol-generating substrate, a mouthpiece, and a paper wrapper circumscribing at least a portion of the aerosol-generating substrate. The aerosol-generating substrate comprises at least one aerosol former in an amount of between about 5 percent and about 30 percent by weight of the aerosol-generating substrate. The paper wrapper has a wet tensile strength of at least about 5 Newtons per 15 mm when measured in accordance with the Wet Tensile Strength Test. - A packing material combining a plurality of segments constituting a smoking article may have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and a tensile strength of 6.0 kgf/15 mm or more, and the average length of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packing material may be in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less.
- The present disclosure may provide a packing material that combines a plurality of segments constituting a smoking article. Specifically, the packing material according to the present disclosure may have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and a tensile strength of 6.0 kgf/15 mm or more, and the average length of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packing material may be in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less.
- Because the packing material according to the present disclosure has a high basis weight and a high tensile strength by adjusting the average length of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packing material, even if the smoking article does not include a separate tip paper, a plurality of segments in the smoking article may be stably combined. Accordingly, the manufacturing process of the smoking article may be simplified, and the manufacturing cost of the smoking article may be reduced.

FIG. 4 is a view showing another example of a smoking article according to some embodiments. - A packing material combining a plurality of segments constituting a smoking article may have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and a tensile strength of 6.0 kgf/15 mm or more, and the average length of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packing material may be in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less.
- The packing material may have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and 100 gsm or less, and the average length of the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packing material may be in a range of 1.8 mm or more and 2.1 mm or less.
- The plurality of segments may include, in order, a smoking material section, an intermediate structure, a cooling structure, and a filter, and the packing material may be formed to entirely wrap the plurality of segments.
- The smoking material section, the intermediate structure, the cooling structure, and the filter may be wrapped by separate covers, respectively, and the packing material may be formed to entirely wrap the smoking material section, the intermediate structure, the cooling structure, and the filter, which are wrapped by the separate covers, respectively.
- The plurality of segments may include, in order, a front filter, a smoking material section, an intermediate structure, and a rear filter, and the packing material may be formed to entirely wrap the plurality of segments.
- The front filter, the smoking material section, the intermediate structure, and the rear filter may be wrapped by separate covers, respectively, and the packing material may be formed to entirely wrap the front filter, the smoking material section, the intermediate structure, and the rear filter, which are wrapped by the separate covers, respectively.
- Hereinafter, embodiments shown only as examples will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Descriptions will be given below for only specifying the embodiments and will not limit or restrict the scope of claims of the disclosure.
- It will be further understood that the terms "comprises," "comprising," "includes" and/or "including," when used herein, do not necessarily indicate all of stated features, integers, steps, operations, elements, and/or components described in the specification and may preclude some of the stated features, the integers, steps, operations, elements, and/or components. Also, the terms do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps, operations, elements, components, and/or groups thereof.
- Also, it will be understood that, although the terms first, second, etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another.
- The terms used in the disclosure are selected from among common terms that are currently widely used in consideration of their function in the disclosure. However, the terms may be different according to an intention of one of ordinary skill in the art, a precedent, or the advent of new technology. Also, in particular cases, the terms are discretionally selected by the applicant of the disclosure, and the meaning of those terms will be described in detail in the corresponding part of the detailed description. Therefore, the terms used in the disclosure are not merely designations of the terms, but the terms are defined based on the meaning of the terms and content throughout the disclosure.
- The present embodiments relate to a packing material that combines a plurality of segments constituting a smoking article. Aspects well known to one of ordinary skill in the art will not be described in detail.

FIG. 2 is a view showing an example of a smoking article according to some embodiments. - Referring to
FIG. 2 , asmoking article 20 may include asmoking material section 210, anintermediate structure 220, acooling structure 230, afilter 240, afirst cover 210a, asecond cover 220a, athird cover 230a, afourth cover 240a, and apacking material 250. The smokingarticle 20 may be a heating-type cigarette used with an aerosol-generating apparatus. - The
smoking material section 210 may contain an aerosol-generating material. For example, thesmoking material section 210 may include a strand of tobacco. - For example, the aerosol-generating material may include at least one of glycerin, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, and oleyl alcohol.
- The
smoking material section 210 may have an elongated rod shape, and the length of thesmoking material section 210 may vary and may, in an optional embodiment, be about 7 millimeters to about 15 millimeters, for example, 12 millimeters. Furthermore, the diameter of thesmoking material section 210 may be about 7 millimeters to about 9 millimeters, for example, 7.9 millimeters. - In an alternative embodiment, the
smoking material section 210 may contain other additives such as a flavoring agent, a wetting agent and/or an acetate compound. For example, the flavoring agent may include licorice, sucrose, fructose syrup, isosweet, cocoa, lavender, cinnamon, cardamom, celery, fenugreek, cascarilla, sandalwood, bergamot, geranium, honey essence, rose oil, vanilla, lemon oil, orange oil, mint oil, cinnamon, caraway, cognac, jasmine, chamomile, menthol, ylang-ylang, salvia, spearmint, ginger, coriander, coffee, or the like. In addition, the wetting agent may include glycerin, propylene glycol, or the like. - In an alternative embodiment, the
smoking material section 210 may include a reconstituted tobacco material having a piece such as a rod. The reconstituted tobacco material may be prepared by grinding a tobacco raw material, mixing a solvent and various additives in the ground tobacco raw material to make a slurry-like material, drying the slurry-like material to form a sheet, and then processing the sheet. - For example, the
smoking material section 210 may include a plurality of strands of tobacco material. One strand may have a length of about 10 millimeters to about 14 millimeters (e.g., 12 millimeters), a width of about 0.8 millimeters to about 1.2 millimeters (e.g., 1 millimeter), and a thickness of about 0.08 millimeters to about 0.12 millimeters (e.g., 0.1 millimeters). - By allowing the
smoking material section 210 to include a plurality of stranded materials obtained by processing a wide tobacco sheet form, aerosol generation may increase as the density of a tobacco material filled in thesmoking material section 210 increases, and manufacturing characteristics of thesmoking material section 210 may be improved. - The
filter 240 may be arranged in a direction facing thesmoking material section 210 and may be an area through which an aerosol material generated in thesmoking material section 210 passes immediately before a user inhales the aerosol material. - The
filter 240 may include various materials, for example, cellulose acetate. - In an alternative embodiment, the
filter 240 may include a recess filter including a hollow. - In an alternative embodiment, the length of the
filter 240 may be about 5 millimeters to about 15 millimeters. - In an alternative embodiment, the
filter 240 may include at least one capsule (not shown). The capsule (not shown) provided in thefilter 240 may have a structure in which a content liquid containing a fragrance is wrapped with a film, and may have, for example, a spherical or cylindrical shape. - In addition, a material forming the film of the capsule (not shown) provided in the
filter 240 may be starch and/or a gelling agent. For example, gellan gum or gelatin may be used as the gelling agent. Furthermore, a gelling aid may be further used as the material forming the film of the capsule (not shown). In this case, for example, calcium chloride may be used as the gelling aid. Furthermore, a plasticizer may be further used as the material forming the film of the capsule (not shown). In this case, glycerin and/or sorbitol may be used as the plasticizer. In addition, a coloring agent may be further used as the material forming the film of the capsule (not shown). - For example, menthol, essential oil of a plant, etc. may be used as the fragrance contained in the content liquid of the capsule. In addition, for example, a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) may be used as a solvent of the fragrance contained in the content liquid. In addition, the content liquid may contain other additives such as a pigment, an emulsifier, and a thickener.
- The
intermediate structure 220 may be arranged between thefilter 240 and thesmoking material section 210, for example, adjacent to thesmoking material section 210. - The
intermediate structure 220 may include various materials, for example, may include cellulose acetate. - In an alternative embodiment, the
intermediate structure 220 may be in the form of a tube including a hollow formed therein. - The length of the
intermediate structure 220 may be about 7 millimeters to about 15 millimeters, for example, 7 millimeters. In addition, the length of theintermediate structure 220 may be variously set, and the entire length of thesmoking article 20 may be controlled according to the length of theintermediate structure 220. - The
cooling structure 230 may be arranged between thesmoking material section 210 and thefilter 240, specifically, between theintermediate structure 220 and thefilter 240. In an alternative embodiment, thecooling structure 230 may contact theintermediate structure 220 and thefilter 240. - The
cooling structure 230 may cool an aerosol generated in thesmoking material section 210. This allows a user to inhale an aerosol at an appropriate and safe temperature that is not too high. - For example, when the
smoking article 20 is inserted into an aerosol-generating apparatus and used, thecooling structure 230 may cool an aerosol generated as a heater provided in the aerosol-generating apparatus heats thesmoking material section 210. - The length of the
cooling structure 230 may be about 10 millimeters to about 20 millimeters, for example, 14 millimeters. - The
cooling structure 230 may include various materials. For example, thecooling structure 230 may contain poly lactic acid (PLA). - The
cooling structure 230 may be manufactured in various ways. In an alternative embodiment, thecooling structure 230 may be manufactured (e.g., woven) using fibers containing poly lactic acid, in which case the risk that thecooling structure 230 is deformed or loses function by an external impact may be lowered. In addition, by changing a method of combining the fibers, acooling structure 230 having various shapes may be manufactured. - In addition, by manufacturing the
cooling structure 230 by using fibers, a surface area in contact with the aerosol may increase. Therefore, an aerosol cooling effect of thecooling structure 230 may be further improved. - The
first cover 210a may be formed to wrap thesmoking material section 210, and thesecond cover 220a may be formed to wrap theintermediate structure 220. Each of thefirst cover 210a and thesecond cover 220a may include various materials, for example, papers. In an alternative embodiment, each of thefirst cover 210a and thesecond cover 220a may include papers having oil resistance. - The
third cover 230a may be formed to wrap thecooling structure 230, and thefourth cover 240a may be formed to wrap thefilter 240. Each of thethird cover 230a and thefourth cover 240a may include various materials, for example, general papers (including hard paper). - In an alternative embodiment, each of the
third cover 230a and thefourth cover 240a may include papers having oil resistance. - The packing
material 250 may be formed to entirely wrap a plurality of segments constituting thesmoking article 20. For example, the packingmaterial 250 may be formed to entirely wrap thesmoking material section 210, theintermediate structure 220, thecooling structure 230, and thefilter 240. In addition, the packingmaterial 250 may contact thefirst cover 210a, thesecond cover 220a, thethird cover 230a, and thefourth cover 240a while wrapping thefirst cover 210a, thesecond cover 220a, thethird cover 230a, and thefourth cover 240a. - When the basis weight of the packing
material 250 increases, the tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 also increases. In addition, when the basis weight and tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 increases, the stiffness of the packingmaterial 250 increases, and thus, as the basis weight and tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 increases, the plurality of segments wrapped by the packingmaterial 250 may be stably combined, and when a user smokes, the possibility that thesmoking article 20 composed of the plurality of segments is broken may be lowered. - However, when the basis weight and tensile strength of the packing
material 250 excessively increases, it may be difficult to manufacture thesmoking article 20 as a cylindrical rod due to resilience caused by the high stiffness of the packingmaterial 250. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the ranges of basis weight and tensile strength at which the plurality of segments wrapped by the packingmaterial 250 may be stably combined and thesmoking article 20 may be easily manufactured as a rod. - Table 1 below is a table showing the degree of breakage of the
smoking article 20 in a border region between the plurality of segments according to the basis weight and tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250. In Table 1, the degree of breakage of thesmoking article 20 in the border region between the plurality of segments was determined by a sensory evaluation based on the number of broken smoking articles when 20smoking articles 20 were smoked.[Table 1] basis weight (g/m2) 40 60 80 100 tensile strength (kgf/15mm) 4.7 6.3 9.0 11.1 degree of breakage in border region between plurality of segments 14 (insufficient) 1 (good) 0 (good) 0 (good) - Referring to Table 1, when the basis weight of the packing
material 250 is 60 gsm or more and the tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 is 6.3 kgf/15 mm or more, the degree of breakage in the border region between the plurality of segments is 1 or less, and thus, it can be seen that the packingmaterial 250 has sufficient stiffness (corresponding to good). Therefore, the packingmaterial 250 may be manufactured to have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and a tensile strength of 6.0 kgf/15 mm or more. - Table 2 below is a table summarizing how many minutes a rod manufacturing operation is performed under the condition that a combiner speed is 500 rod per minute (rpm), in order to determine whether it is easy to manufacture the

material 250 exceeds 100 gsm, the stiffness of the packingmaterial 250 excessively increases, resulting in insufficient rod manufacturing workability. Therefore, the basis weight of the packingmaterial 250 has to be determined to be 100 gsm or less in order to be easy enough to manufacture thesmoking article 20 as a rod. Therefore, the packingmaterial 250 may be manufactured to have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and 100 gsm or less. - The tensile strength of the packing
material 250 is closely related to the lengths of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250. For example, Table 3 below is a table showing the tensile strength of packingmaterial 250 according to the average length of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250 when the basis weight of packingmaterial 250 is 60 g/m2.[Table 3] average length of cellulose pulp fibers (mm) 2.1 2.0 1.8 tensile strength (kgf/15mm) 7.5 8.3 8.5 freeness (SR) 20 25 33 - Referring to Table 3, it can be seen that the tensile strength of the packing
material 250 increases as the average length of the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250 decreases. Specifically, by increasing the freeness, a combination area between the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250 may increase, and as the freeness increases, the cellulose pulp fibers are softened and fibrillated to improve contact between the cellulose pulp fibers. Therefore, the tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 may increase. In addition, as the tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 increases, the stiffness of the packingmaterial 250 may also increase. Therefore, it can be seen that adjusting the average length of the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250 may determine the basis weight or tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 in an appropriate range. - According to the results of the experiment, the average length of the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packing
material 250 has to be determined in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less in order for the packingmaterial 250 to have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and 100 gsm or less and a tensile strength of 6.0 kgf/15 mm or more. For example, the average length of the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250 may be determined in a range of 1.8 mm or more and 2.1 mm or less. Hereinafter, the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250 will be described in more detail with reference toFIG. 3 . -
FIG. 3 is a view showing a scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of cellulose pulp fibers constituting a packing material according to some embodiments. - Referring to
FIG. 3 , it can be seen that the packingmaterial 250 is formed by combining a plurality of cellulose pulp fibers with each other. When the average length of the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers is reduced, the tensile strength of the packingmaterial 250 including the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers may increase because a combination area between the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers increases. - The average length of the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers may be adjusted in order for the packing
material 250 to have an appropriate range of tensile strength. For example, the average length of the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers may be determined in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less. In this case, that the average length of the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers is in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less may mean that the length of anycellulose pulp fiber 30 among the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers is 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less. -
FIG. 4 is a view showing another example of a smoking article according to some embodiments. - Referring to
FIG. 4 , asmoking article 40 may include afront filter 410, asmoking material section 420, anintermediate structure 430, arear filter 440, afirst cover 410a, asecond cover 420a, athird cover 430a, afourth cover 440a, and apacking material 450. Description that is the same as that given with reference toFIG. 2 may be omitted. Thesmoking article 40 may be a heating-type cigarette used with an aerosol-generating apparatus. - The
smoking material section 420 may contain an aerosol-generating material. For example, thesmoking material section 210 may include a strand of tobacco, or may include a tobacco material in the form of granules. However, the disclosure is not limited thereto. - The
front filter 410 and therear filter 440 may be arranged at both ends of thesmoking article 40, respectively, and may be areas through which an aerosol material generated in thesmoking material section 420 passes. Thefront filter 410 and therear filter 440 may include various materials. For example, thefront filter 410 and therear filter 440 may include cellulose acetate. - The
intermediate structure 430 may be arranged between therear filter 440 and thesmoking material section 420, for example, adjacent to thesmoking material section 420. Theintermediate structure 430 may include various materials, for example, may include cellulose acetate. - The
first cover 410a may be formed to wrap thefront filter 410, and thesecond cover 420a may be formed to wrap thesmoking material section 420. In addition, thethird cover 430a may be formed to wrap theintermediate structure 430, and thefourth cover 440a may be formed to wrap therear filter 440. Each of thefirst cover 410a, thesecond cover 420a, thethird cover 430a, and thefourth cover 440a may include various materials, for example, papers. In an alternative embodiment, each of thefirst cover 410a, thesecond cover 420a, thethird cover 430a, and thefourth cover 440a may include papers having oil resistance. - The packing
material 450 may be formed to entirely wrap a plurality of segments constituting thesmoking article 40. For example, the packingmaterial 450 may be formed to entirely wrap thefront filter 410, thesmoking material section 420, theintermediate structure 430, and therear filter 440. In addition, the packingmaterial 450 may contact thefirst cover 410a, thesecond cover 420a, thethird cover 430a, and thefourth cover 440a while wrapping thefirst cover 410a, thesecond cover 420a, thethird cover 430a, and thefourth cover 440a. - The packing
material 450 may have a suitable range of basis weight and tensile strength so that thesmoking article 40 is easily manufactured as a rod while a plurality of segments wrapped by the packingmaterial 450 may be stably combined. For example, the packingmaterial 450 may have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and a tensile strength of 6.0 kgf/15 mm or more. In addition, the packingmaterial 450 may have a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and 100 gsm or less. - The average length of a plurality of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packing
material 450 may be adjusted in order for the packingmaterial 450 to have an appropriate range of basis weight or tensile strength. For example, the average length of the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 450 may be determined in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less. In this case, that the average length of the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers is in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less may mean that the length of any cellulose pulp fiber among the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers is 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less. The average length of the plurality of cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 450 may be determined in a range of 1.8 mm or more and 2.1 mm or less. - Because the packing
250 and 450 according to the embodiment of the present disclosure has a high basis weight and tensile strength as the average length of the cellulose pulp fibers constituting the packingmaterial 250 and 450 is adjusted, the plurality of segments provided in thematerial 20 and 40 may be stably combined even if thesmoking article 20 and 40 does not have separate tip paper. Accordingly, the manufacturing process of thesmoking article 20 and 40 may be simplified, and the manufacturing cost of thesmoking article 20 and 40 may be reduced.smoking article
Claims (9)
- A packing material (250, 450) for combining a plurality of segments for constituting a smoking article (20, 40),wherein the packing material (250, 450) has a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and a tensile strength of 6.0 kgf /15 mm or more, andan average length of cellulose pulp fibers (30) constituting the packing material (250, 450) is in a range of 1.5 mm or more and 2.5 mm or less.
- The packing material of claim 1, wherein the packing material (250, 450) has a basis weight of 60 gsm or more and 100 gsm or less.
- The packing material of claim 1, wherein the average length of the cellulose pulp fibers (30) constituting the packing material (250, 450) is in a range of 1.8 mm or more and 2.1 mm or less.
- The packing material of claim 1, wherein the plurality of segments include, in order, a smoking material section (210, 420), an intermediate structure (220, 430), a cooling structure (230), and a filter (240, 440), and
the packing material (250, 450) is formed to entirely wrap the plurality of segments. - The packing material of claim 4, wherein the smoking material section (210, 420), the intermediate structure (220, 430), the cooling structure (230), and the filter (240, 440) are wrapped by separate covers, respectively, and
the packing material (250, 450) is formed to entirely wrap the smoking material section (210, 420), the intermediate structure (220, 430), the cooling structure (230), and the filter (240, 440), which are wrapped by the separate covers, respectively. - The packing material of claim 1, wherein the plurality of segments include, in order, a front filter (410), a smoking material section (420), an intermediate structure (430), and a rear filter (440), and
the packing material (250, 450) is formed to entirely wrap the plurality of segments. - The packing material of claim 6, wherein the front filter (410), the smoking material section (420), the intermediate structure (430), and the rear filter (440) are wrapped by separate covers, respectively, and
the packing material (250, 450) is formed to entirely wrap the front filter (410), the smoking material section (420), the intermediate structure (430), and the rear filter (440), which are wrapped by the separate covers, respectively. - The packing material of any one of the previous claims, wherein the packing material combines a plurality of segments constituting a smoking article (20, 40).
- Smoking article (20, 40) comprising a plurality of segments, wherein the plurality of segments is combined by a packing material (250, 450) according to any one of the previous claims.
